Description

My career started at the age of 17 when I started a job as a carer in a care home, looking after people who suffered with a wide range of difficulties.
It only took me a few weeks to know that this type of career was my calling in life as I loved it so much and caring came very natural to me.
I worked in this care home for many years, although I loved this job I felt it was time to move on and broaden my skills and knowledge. This was when I started my career with Marie Curie.
I began Marie curie as a healthcare assistant and soon worked my way up to a senior healthcare assistant. This job involved caring for individuals with all types of terminal illnesses. I learnt so much in this role; I learnt skills in enteral feeding, oral suction, syringe driver management, administration off medication, Oxygen therapy, Moving and handling and basic life support; adults and children.
I received regular refreshers to keep my skills and knowledge up to date.
My role within this organisation was caring for end of life patient’s In there own home, enabling the relative to get some well needed rest.
I have a strong belief that a caring role isn’t just about the patient but the whole family. I continued my career with Marie curie for 15 years Often I would be the only person a patient and their relative would see in days, Therefore sometimes they just needed time to off load their emotions or even just have conversations about normal day to day life.
I would spend time talking into the early hours if that is what was needed, as talking is a skill which I am outstanding at.
but unfortunately had to leave due to both my parents both falling ill and needing full time care. I have spent the last 2 and a half years caring for them in their own home. Now that I am no longer needed for this, I am Extremely excited to get back into the caring profession. Meeting more new people that are in need of my help and care.
